Single Men / Boarding Houses


Young men of the parish typically lived in boarding houses or lodging houses. During a time when meals were difficult to prepare and before the invention of washing machines, boarding houses, offered a convenient and affordable living arrangement, especially for young men working on the iron ore docks.

As Belgian immigrants would arrive in Allouez their housing arrangements would be made through informal networks such as the Belgian Club ensuring that these men who knew little English would find a cultural haven where they could converse in Flemish.
