Pew Rents

Notice the category of “pew rents” in the annual report under the column of receipts. Parishioners at the time paid an annual fee for the right to occupy a particular pew week after week. The pews up front were typically more expensive. The practice was approved by various provincial councils, including the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, and endorsed by the Holy See. In these endorsements it was strictly stipulated that an ample sufficiency of free seats should always be available to accomodate those who cannot afford to rent one.
