Girl Altar Servers Introduced

Fr. Schoone started allowing girls to serve at Mass in 1992. Among the first group was 10 year old Linsday Van Vynckt.

Fr. Schoone said that by allowing girls to be servers we were communicating to all that

“we belong to a fuller church, male and female, sharing common gifts.”

Although the Vatican had yet to officially approve letting girls to serve, the Diocese of Superior had chosen to allow girls to serve rather than rule against them because the lifting of the ban was seen as inevitable. Permission had already been granted for females to serve as readers and extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist. Traditionally, these roles were considered high than the position of servers.
